The holidays are swiftly approaching, and now’s the time to start thinking about what to get your friends and family this year. In an age when online shopping is easier and faster than ever, it seems we’ve lost some of the holiday magic that comes along with intentional trips to local stores. The Chamber staff is slowing down this holiday season and supporting our small businesses right here in Cabarrus County. Here’s why.
Investing in our local economy
Supporting our local small businesses is essential for maintaining job opportunities. In fact, according to a 2023 study, 27% of jobs in NC are from businesses with less than 50 employees, and 45% are from those with less than 500. In addition, shopping at small businesses keeps your tax dollars local, strengthening our schools, public safety, public parks and events, etc. According to the National Business Association, 68% of small business spending stays local compared to 43% among large retail companies.
Strengthening community connections
When you shop at small local businesses, you’re supporting your fellow community members. Small business owners and employees are often our neighbors, former classmates, or peers, and their spaces become opportunities for us to connect. Cabarrus County is a community built on connections. Engaging with local businesses and fellow community members is key to bolstering the county’s identity as a place where folks show up for each other. Small businesses also give back to the community by sponsoring youth sports teams, donating time and money to local nonprofits, participating in local events, and so much more. In 2022, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that 80% of small businesses prioritize giving back to the local community.
Quality gifts and service
One benefit you don’t get when online shopping is being able to ensure the quality of what you’re buying. Financial and time constraints are common concerns around holiday shopping. Going into a physical store allows you to feel and assess the item you’re buying before you commit. This translates into time and monetary savings because you don’t have to battle with returns and refunds. There’s also the personalized support you get with small businesses that online sites can’t offer. Whether it’s a friendly face greeting you, or personalized shopping recommendations, small business owners take great care to create an unforgettable experience for their customers.
Sip & Stroll
The Chamber is offering a chance for you to shop small this holiday season! Join us for our Sip & Stroll event on December 3rd from 4-6:30 pm. This is a casual, drop-in event that starts at the Cabarrus Center where we’ll have holiday-inspired light bites from Grate Catering, a mobile coffee (or hot chocolate/cider/chai if that’s more your vibe) bar from More Than a Cup, and vendor tables showcasing holiday offerings from fellow Chamber Members. Then, follow the provided map to visit participating Downtown Concord businesses. Get a signature from each vendor and business to enter the raffle to win our door prize! Tickets are available to Chamber Members and are $40. If you want to showcase your holiday retail or specials, grab a vendor table before they’re sold out (spaces limited)!
