Town of Harrisburg Mayor Jennifer Teague and Councilman Mike Thevenin attended an event on Wednesday, September 24, with Vice President J.D. Vance aimed at empowering state and local law enforcement. This event brought together local leaders and law enforcement officials to discuss strategies for maintaining safe communities.

This event addressed community safety efforts and the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement, as well as how municipalities can coordinate with county, state, and federal agencies to ensure the best possible public safety. The Harrisburg representatives’ visit with Vice President Vance underscores Harrisburg’s proactive approach to creating a safe environment for its residents.

The Town of Harrisburg is one of the safest Towns in the region and consistently maintains low crime rates. According to data from CrimeGrade.org, Harrisburg’s overall crime per capita is lower than both the North Carolina and national averages. This statistic bolsters the Town’s confidence in its current public safety strategy, which involves partnering with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services and establishing the Harrisburg Division of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office in 2022. This unique arrangement allows for seamless integration of patrols and community-focused policing efforts. This also serves as a reminder that even safe communities must remain vigilant and proactive.

“We must continue to ensure that our Harrisburg Deputy Division has the resources, training, and support it needs to keep our community safe,” said Mayor Jennifer Teague. “This includes investing in technology, expanding our officer force to keep pace with our population growth, and fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and the community they serve. As our very own Sheriff Shaw and District Attorney Shanley shared the stage, it truly highlights the importance of good leadership and the dedication that Cabarrus County makes in keeping us safe.”

“Crime doesn’t stop at county lines,” Mayor Teague added. “Due to our proximity to the larger population centers and our transportation routes, Harrisburg is a soft target for drug and violent crime. Public safety comes with a financial cost, which was ignored and underfunded for many years. I am proud that in these last four years, we have been able to add the Harrisburg Sheriff Division for our residents, and the results have been incredible.”

The Town of Harrisburg remains committed to working with our partners in law enforcement to ensure a safe and secure community for our residents.
