Located in the heart of downtown Kannapolis, the Swanee Theatre has been part of the community for more than 85 years. Originally opened as a movie theatre in 1940, the historic venue has evolved into a modern entertainment and event space while preserving the character that makes it a local landmark.

A Downtown Landmark Since 1940

The Swanee Theatre opened its doors on November 1, 1940, during a time when Kannapolis was deeply connected to the textile industry. Built as a gathering place for textile workers, their families, and the surrounding community, the theatre quickly became an important part of city life.

Opening night featured the movie, Seven Sinners, starring Marlene Dietrich and John Wayne. For generations since then the Swanee provided a place where residents could relax, enjoy entertainment, and spend time with family and friends.

As entertainment changed, the City of Kannapolis recognized an opportunity to preserve the historic building while giving it a new purpose. Through restoration and reinvention, the Swanee has become a modern venue that continues its tradition of bringing people together.

Entertainment and Events

Today, the Swanee Theatre hosts a variety of experiences, including concerts, comedy shows, exercise classes, workshops, and community events. Its intimate atmosphere allows audiences to enjoy performances while surrounded by the character of a historic theatre.

The Swanee is also available for private rentals such as birthday celebrations, weddings and receptions, corporate meetings, holiday parties, banquets, fundraising events, live performances, school events, and community gatherings.

The main auditorium can accommodate more than 150 guests with banquet-style seating or up to 360 guests with theatre-style seating. Additional meeting rooms are available for smaller gatherings, meetings, and breakout sessions.

Historic Character, Modern Amenities

While the Swanee celebrates its history, it offers modern services to support today’s events. Rental enhancements include audio and visual support, sound technicians, event staff, bartending services, kitchen usage, outside catering options, green room access, and meeting space.

One of the theatre’s most recognizable features is its historic lighted marquee. The marquee may be rented separately or included with an event package, allowing hosts to display a personalized message for guests and creating a memorable photo opportunity.

Experience Downtown Kannapolis

Located at 200 West Avenue, the Swanee Theatre places visitors within walking distance of restaurants, local businesses, public spaces, and other downtown attractions. Guests can enjoy dinner before a show, explore downtown, or make an event part of a larger community experience.

More than 85 years after opening its doors, the Swanee Theatre continues to add new chapters to its history. From its beginnings as a movie theatre for textile workers and families to its role today as an entertainment and event venue, the Swanee remains a place where Kannapolis residents and visitors can make lasting memories.
